I know most of you aren't wrestling fans, but one of my guilty pleasure type favorites passed away yesterday. His birth name was Jerome Young. The world knew him as New Jack.
He took his name from the film New Jack City. He came to the ring to the song of Natural Born Killaz by Ice Cube. He pushed the envelope in every which way. A lot of people will tell you wrestling is fake. The outcome is pre-determined. They hurt themselves nightly. New Jack was a whole different story. He was there to hurt people. He would usually come to the ring with a trash can full of weapons, consisting of a crutch, a guitar, a vacuum cleaner, maybe a stop sign, and bladed weapons. He admitted to snorting cocaine before his matches, which explained him jumping 30 feet of of balconies onto his opponents.
He gained a lot of notoriety for wrestling a teenager who called himself Mass Transit, who lied about his age and experience, and slicing his forehead wide open. He once also stabbed another wrestler with a 10 inch blade an alleged 14 times, though he claims nine. He threw a man 40 feet off of a scaffold after tasering him. I'm gonna post some clips. I never met the guy, but from what I heard, he was good to his fans, but the dude was a psycho in the ring. He was one of a kind. For those of you interested in him and want to see further, there's a show from VICE called Dark Side Of The Ring. This is his episode, The Life & Crimes of New Jack. Well worth a look at a very polarizing figure.
